State Forest Campgrounds in Michigan

Michigan is a state of natural landscapes, from the sandy shores of Lake Michigan to dense forests and giant sand dunes. A variety of campgrounds in and around the forests offer either modern or rustic campsites. Many forests have hiking trails and hunting areas. Michigan campgrounds are also often near a body of water, providing plenty of fishing and boating opportunities.
  1. Warren Dunes State Park

    • Warren Dunes State Park occupies nearly 2,000 acres along 3 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline in the southwest corner of the state. The sandy dunes are as tall as 260 feet in some places, providing panoramic views of the lake and surrounding area. Many visitors enjoy climbing the dunes to hang glide. Campers can explore the park's 6 miles of hiking trails, which are also used for cross-country skiing in the winter. Others choose to relax on the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan or go for a swim. The campground offers 182 modern mini-cabins with 50 amp electric hookups and modern restrooms. More rustic tent campsites offer latrine toilets and hand-pump water. Six sites designed for larger groups, including picnic areas, are available as well. Alcohol is prohibited at this state park.

    • Occupying approximately 5,300 acres, Ludington State Park is one of the larger campgrounds in the state. More than 350 campsites are available, including mini-cabins with electric and rustic sites with latrine toilets. Ten remote, forested campsites are also available, but they are only accessible via a one-mile hike. Visitors can explore the sand dunes, marshlands and forests or the Lake Michigan shoreline. The area is popular with hunters, hikers, bikers and cross-country skiers. Lake Michigan is a popular swimming, canoeing and fishing spot. Visitors can take a 1 1/2-mile walk to the Big Sable Point Lighthouse. A playground, a picnic shelter and a store make this a nice location for families or groups. Wireless Internet access is also available near the park's main office. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash at all times and cannot be left unattended.
