Campgrounds in the Redwoods of California

The Redwood National and State Parks protect the spectacular redwood forests in the coastal areas of southern Oregon and northern California, combining the resources of the National Park Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation to preserve the region's unique ecosystem. The State of California operates the campgrounds within the park, but other options are available in the surrounding communities.

  1. Jedediah Smith Campground

    • Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park perches on the banks of the Smith River, the last of California's major rivers that remains free flowing. The park protects 10,000 acres of redwood forest and offers 89 campsites, each equipped with a fire ring, table and cupboard. Campsites are situated near restrooms with hot showers and some will accommodate trailers or motor homes, although no hookups are available. The campground is open year-round, but reservations are recommended for summer camping (see Resources, below).

    Mill Creek Campground

    • Located in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Mill Creek has 145 RV or tent campsites that accommodate up to eight persons each. The campground features restrooms with hot showers, an RV sanitation station and well-maintained hiking trails. Campsites are equipped with a fire ring, table and cupboard. Campers are cautioned to keep food and toiletries secure to avoid contact with the bears that frequent the area. The campground is open May 1 through September 7 and reservations are accepted from January through September.

    Gold Bluffs Beach Campground

    • The Gold Bluffs Beach Campground is situated along ten miles of sandy beaches bordered by dense coastal redwoods. The 26 campsites, suitable for RV's (no hookups) or tents, circle restroom facilities that offer solar-powered showers. Beautiful Fern Canyon is only two miles away and is open until dusk daily, barring problematic weather or trail conditions. You may spot Roosevelt Elk or bears in this area. The park service recommends keeping a safe distance from wildlife and keeping campsites clean. Fishing is permitted in season. The site is open year-round, and campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis only.

    Redwoods River Resort & Campground

    • The Redwoods River Resort, on the Eel River, is a 21-acre facility that is south of the park system but still within the redwoods environment. The resort offers 50 camp-sites, some with full RV hookups, and two camping cabins, all located near restroom and laundry facilities. Six housekeeping cabins, each sleeping two to six guests, offer full amenities, including stove and refrigerator, dishes and cooking utensils, and bed linens and towels. An eight-room lodge offers similar amenities. Camping fees are similar to those of the state parks; lodge and cabin accommodations are more expensive.
