The area west of the Charleston peninsula is known as West Ashley. This area is the oldest suburb in Charleston and is home to a few historical plantations such as Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place. Many people visit West Ashley for it's Historic District and beaches. Visitors can choose from a variety of hotels based on amenities and distance from historical sites and colleges.

The plantation stable yard still houses many of the same animals that slaves cared for during the 18th and 19th centuries. Weavers, carpenters and blacksmiths show you how the slaves made tools and clothing by hand. Crafters and guides are available to educate you on the plantation life and slavery during the 18th and 19th centuries. Guided tours are offered for guests at the inn, as well as a carriage ride for an additional fee. Horseback riding is available for those interested in trail riding or lessons. Kayaking on the Ashley River is available with a guided tour. Complimentary breakfast is served each morning and The Middleton Place Plantation Restaurant offers lunch daily and dinner every night except Mondays. Reservations are recommended for dinner.
