Homer offers RV travelers options to camp at sites near the downtown area or on the spit. The downtown area offers nearby conveniences such as restaurants, a grocery store, a post office and other businesses. Those staying at sites on Homer's spit also have access to the marina and restaurants and small shops open mainly during the summer months. The spit is located approximately 5 miles away from downtown Homer and the main highway and is considered a tourist area.
The Driftwood Inn RV Park, located downtown and overlooking Bishop's Beach, offers free wireless Internet access, showers and cable television service. Full and partial electricity and water and sewer hook-ups are available at most of Homer's RV parks. Other amenities at Homer Spit Campground and Oceanview RV parks, both located on the spit, include laundry facilities, a gift shop, picnic areas and close proximity to charter fishing boats. Many RV parks also offer tent sites for car campers traveling to Homer.
Halibut fishing is a popular activity with RV travelers to Homer during the summer months. Half or full-day charter boats offer visitors the chance to catch a "barn door" halibut that may exceed 100 pounds. A derby is held each summer and the winner often catches a fish ranging between 300 and 400 pounds. Those wishing to stay on land may watch the returning anglers as they display their catches outside sheds along the spit for weighing and photographs each afternoon. A fishing lagoon also offers residents and visitors the chance to drop a line from the shore and catch salmon as they pass through the area.
Homer is also known for its art community, and several galleries are located downtown and on the spit for travelers to visit. Museums and visitors' centers offer RV campers information on Homer's prolific wildlife and sea life and how to spend a day in the area. Golfers may enjoy a small course located east of downtown, which also has an adjacent RV park.
Due to the challenges of Alaskan winters and road conditions, RV travelers usually visit Homer in the summer months. Most RV campgrounds, especially those located on the spit, are open from early May to mid-September. RV parks located near the downtown district are usually open all year with more limited services available.
