How to Anonymously Report DOT Infractions

The Office of Inspector General established an anonymous seven-day, 24-hour hotline for employees to contact if they come across cases of "fraud, waste, abuse or mismanagement" involving U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) programs. In fact, anyone, including DOT contractors and the general public, are free to report an infraction on the hotline. The report ia then passed on to the department's safety regulatory agencies. Complaints range from kickbacks and theft to stimulus abuse.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down as much specific information about the alleged wrongdoing as possible, including the identities of any people involved, a description of the infraction and location. Have this information handy when you call it in.

    • 2

Call the hotline (1-800-424-9071) and speak clearly, giving as much information as available. While you are not required to give your name, DOT officials encourage you to do so, in the event that investigators working the case have any follow-up questions.

    • 3

Navigate on the Internet to the OIG Hotline Complaint Form (see Resources) if you wish to submit your complaint online. Again, this can be done anonymously. You can also mail your complaint to the Inspector General (DOT Inspector General, 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, West Bldg 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20590) or email it ([email protected]).
