How to Use Multiple Airlines

Many people stick with a favorite airline when travelling, perhaps because they had a good experience and are now loyal customers or they enjoy racking up frequent flier miles. But not considering multiple airlines can be a waste of money. By choosing the airline offering the lowest fare, you can save both dollars and time in the long run.

  1. Finding the best airfare

    • 1

Search for flights using various Internet sources. Several sites make it easy to compare airfares and schedules for numerous airlines. These include Travelocity.com, Orbitz.com, Expedia.com, Hotwire.com, Priceline.com, and Kayak.com.

    • 2

Check the actual sites of the airlines that have the lowest fares, direct flights, and/or days and times that fit your schedule. For example, if you see on Orbitz.com that American Airlines has a flight for a price that fits your budget, check the American Airlines site directly. The fare offered directly by the airline may be even lower.

    • 3

Use a travel agent. Travel agents are often privy to discounts that ordinary travelers can't access. While you are searching for the best deal, allow a travel agent to do the same.

    • 4

Plan your own trip. Whether you are flying between two cities or to multiple destinations, you don't have to do it all with one airline. Check all the airlines that fly to and from your destinations; for example, if flying round-trip from Atlanta to Chicago, you might find that although Delta offers a reasonably priced ticket, your fare would be cheaper if you flew one-way from Atlanta on Delta, and returned on Air Tran.

    • 5

Stay informed. When using multiple airlines, know the policies and procedures for each one. Be aware of possible penalty fees for missing or changing a flight; know how far in advance you need to change your flight plan if necessary; review check-in requirements, baggage rules and fees.

Keep track of available incentives. Airlines offer everything from discounts on car rentals and hotels to frequent flier miles that can add up to free trips. Keep a detailed log and organized records, and use your perks whenever you get the opportunity.
