Free Things to Do in San Jose

San Jose, California, is in the central part of the state, 35 miles south of San Francisco. The city offers numerous free activities.   1. Kelley Park

    • Kelley Park is 156 acres and offers an array of free activities. The park consists of several areas. Stroll through the Japanese Friendship Garden boasting koi filled ponds filled by streams and waterfalls. The garden is open daily from 10 a.m. to dusk. History Park will take you back in time to a century ago to wander the streets amidst 28 authentic structures and hop aboard a historical trolley. The park highlights the culture and history of San Jose and the Santa Clara Valley. Kelley Park is open daily from 8 am until a half hour past sunset.

    Alum Rock Park

    • Alum Rock Park is a 730-acre site in the foothills offering outdoor activities. Picnic facilities are available, some equipped with barbecues. You may reserve certain areas for large events. The park provides approximately 13 miles of trails. Hikers are welcome on all trails while equestrians and cyclists are allowed on designated trails. Penitencia Creek runs through the park amid the shade of towering trees and vines. Two playgrounds are available for children. The park is closed on Mondays. Hours are 8 a.m. until a half hour past sunset.

    South First Fridays

    • You'll enjoy perusing the local art galleries.

      Every first Friday of the month beginning at 7 p.m. in downtown San Jose, appreciate a diverse sampling of art work. The street fair consists of artists, open galleries and people watching. Various mediums are displayed including photography, sculptures, abstracts, glass work and tapestries. Live bands and performers provide entertainment.
