Hong Kong Disneyland is located on Penny's Bay, Lantau Island. The resort covers 310 acres. The park encompasses 100 of those acres. The Hong Kong government carried out an enormous land reclamation project so that they had enough land for the park and resort.
Initial construction began in January 2003 after site preparation and infrastructure had taken place. Maintaining Chinese culture was imperative and a big part of the building. The construction followed the ancient Chinese tradition of placement and arrangement known as "feng shui."
Disney's fifth resort, Hong Kong Disneyland, opened on September 12, 2005. It was a blend of traditional Chinese celebrations and Disney parades. Hong Kong dignitaries as well as the Walt Disney Company CEO, President, and officers were present.
Reactions were mixed, muted, and problematic. The small size of the park disappointment some. Long lines, long waits, limited number of rides and concession stands throughout the park proved irritating to many guests. The small size resulted in many guests with pre-sold passes to be turned away during the park's first Chinese New Year celebrations in 2006.
Hong Kong Disneyland, although much smaller, is the closest replica to original Disneyland. Hong Kong Disneyland opened with just 22 attractions while Paris opened with 44, Tokyo and Florida opened with 45 and California with 65. However, the park is a success financially and crowds continue to fill up the park regularly.
Since the day the park opened, talks of expanding and improving the park have been ongoing. Chatter abounds about new rides, new attractions, and even a new park. With its success and popularity, its future and endeavors look very promising.
