Things to Do in Ottawa, Canada

The capital of Canada and the home of the Parliament, Ottawa is approximately a four-hour drive northeast of Toronto and two hours west of Montreal. The picturesque city offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, including bicycle paths, jogging trails and an extensive ice skating rink. With theaters, restaurants, shops, festivals, parks, museums and markets, this cosmopolitan city with an European flair offers plenty of things to do throughout the year.
  1. Rideau Canal

    • The only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the province of Ontario, the Rideau Canal stretches from Kingston to Ottawa and contains the Rideau Canal Skateway, the largest ice skating rink in the world. One of the most popular attractions in Ottawa, skating enthusiasts particularly flock to the rink during the annual Winterlude festival. Held every February, the festival features skating demonstrations and workshops at the rink as well as using it as the site of the Winterlude Triathlon and the Bedzzz Annual Bed Race (see Resources).

    Parliament Hill

    • Located downtown and overlooking the Ottawa River, three neo-Gothic-style buildings comprise the Parliament Buildings. The Centre Block is home to the two houses of Parliament, the Senate and the House of Commons. The carved stone pillars and the stained glass emblems featured in the House of Commons are works of the artist Eleanor Milne. Visitors to the Peace Tower are invited to honor the Canadians who were killed during military service and view their names in the Altars of Sacrifice's five Books of Remembrance in the Memorial Chamber. Between late June and late August visitors can observe the pageantry of the The Peace Tower is also the site of the Changing of the Guard ceremony which occurs daily at 10 a.m., weather permitting. Visitors are welcome to tour to reserve a same-day tour of the buildings, although tours are limited when Parliament is in session. Parliament Hill is also one of the best locations in the country to celebrate the annual Canada Day holiday on July 1. The festivities include concerts, cultural exhibitions and fireworks.

    Byward Market

    • Discover the culinary delights offered in the historic Ottawa neighborhood of Byward. Featuring farmers' markets, flower stalls, cheesemongers, butchers, cafes, restaurants and boutiques, the area has been the home to public markets since 1826.
