How to Enjoy Quebec Canada

Founded four centuries ago on the cliffs overlooking the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City is one of the most charming municipalities in all of Canada. In many ways, Quebec is the most French city in the Americas.

Take a guided tour through La Citadelle, a fortress at the Côte de la Citadelle, still used by the Royal 22e Régiment. Summer is probably the best time to visit, because you can see the Changing of the Guard at 10 a.m. or the Beating of the Retreat at 7 p.m. on the weekend. The former is attended by a military band and Batisse, the Regimental mascot goat. Make sure and see the Regimental Museum, which features weapons, uniforms, maps, medals and artwork.

Prowl around Vieux Quebec, the Old City. This walled district is full of narrow, hilly streets and, as is common in neighborhoods such as this, lots of shops and restaurants. Some of the buildings here date back to the 17th century. The district is divided into the Haute-Ville, or Upper Town, and the Basse-Ville, or Lower Town.

Check into the Fairmont le Chateau Frontenac at 1 rue des Carrières, a huge structure that looks more like a chateau on the Loire than a hotel in Canada. A century old and located in the center of Quebec's Old City, the Frontenac is probably the most photographed building in town.

Enjoy the 10,000 different creatures from 300 species on display at the Parc Aquarium du Québec at 1675 avenue des Hôtels. The indoor and outdoor spaces have been configured to represent ecosystems from all over Canada and the rest of the world. In addition to fish, you'll see walruses, polar bears and seals--ideally at feeding time.

Celebrate at the world-famous Carnaval de Quebec, held every February. Hundreds of thousands of people attend this 17-day event, watching or participating in a variety of sports, dances, games and competitions. The centerpiece of this festival is an elaborate palace constructed of ice.

Visit the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré at 10018 Royale Ave. in the town of Sainte-Anne de Beaupré, near Quebec City. This Gothic structure has lovely stained glass and statuary, as well as life-sized bronze statues of the Stations of the Cross out on the grounds. The church is a hugely popular place of pilgrimage for people who wish to be cured of diseases and other maladies.
