How to Get an IDP From the American Automobile Touring Association

IDP stands for International Driving Permit and allows you to operate a motor vehicle in a country other than the one you are citizen of. It is required if you are either transporting your own car to drive, or if you are driving a rental car in another country. AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (also called the National Automobile Club) are the only two groups that issue IDPs in the United States.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your passport, U.S. driver's license and two passport-sized photos of yourself. Turn each photograph over and sign your full name, in ink, on the back of them.

    • 2

Visit an office of either the AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (see Resources). You can also fill out the IDP application online and mail it in rather than visiting an office.

    • 3

Fill out the application form for the respective organization. In general, the form will require your name, address, contact information, the foreign location you are traveling to, the date of departure and the date you need the IDP to be effective.

    • 4

Pay the associated filing fee, which as of 2010, is less than $20.

    • 5

Wait four to six weeks for your new IDP to arrive in the mail.
