There are several documents that you must submit with your application. Preparing these documents before you fill out your application will ensure a quick application process. You will need a valid passport that is valid for at least six months after you want to enter China. It must also contain one blank page. In addition to a passport, you must have a recent 2-inch-by-2-inch photograph (color or black and white) to attach to the application. If your former nationality was Chinese, you must have your original Chinese passport and the name and photograph that was used for that passport.
In addition to the supporting documents, you must have an invitation letter from a host company or employer stating that it invites you to work in China for a set period of time. You cannot get a work visa for China without first being invited by a company to do so. If you work for an American company, it must write an introduction letter that you can include with your application form.
You may apply for several different types of entry. Single entry is valid for three to six months. Double entry is valid for six months. Multiple entry is valid for 12 months. And those wishing to stay for 24 months must apply for multiple entry and submit documents that show they have made an investment in China or have collaborated significantly with a Chinese company in the form of contracts, licenses or by an official appointment.
You must apply for the work visa at a Chinese consulate. They are located in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Houston (see Resources). If you are not able to apply in person, a representative may submit your application for you. The consulates do not accept mailed applications.
The application fee is $130 for all American citizens regardless of entry type. The processing time is usually four working days, though express service is available for an extra $20 fee. If you apply before 12:30 p.m. on a working day, you may be able to receive your visa the next working day for an extra $30 fee.
No one with a mental disorder, AIDS, venereal disease, leprosy, contagious or infectious disease will be permitted to enter China for any purpose or period of time.
