Kid-friendly Finger Foods for Traveling

When deciding on what kid-friendly finger foods to take with you when you travel with your kids, choose snacks based on the length of the trip, the type of travel, the ages of the kids and storage options. A well-packed cooler, nonperishable snacks and small finger sandwiches are just a few items parents can bring on a trip to keep children well-fed and content.
  1. Sandwiches

    • Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can serve as a simple, kid-friendly snack or meal. To make peanut butter sandwiches interesting, use sandwich cutters to cut the sandwiches into shapes like dinosaurs or smiley faces. Cheese sandwiches make another filling snack for kids.

    Snacks

    • String cheese is a simple snack because it comes individually wrapped and does not take up a lot of space. Cereal bars, small crackers, nonsugared single-boxed cereals and low-salt pretzels also make optimal snacks. By avoiding lots of sugar and salt, children won't need to drink as much, which means less trips to the bathroom. Instead of carrying big bags of items, prepare individual resealable bags for the kids, so they can eat as much as they want, when they want.

    Fruit

    • Apples, bananas and grapes are fruits that travel easily. Choking risks exist with grapes when given to toddlers, so cutting them into smaller pieces lengthwise. Alternatives to fresh fruit include fruit roll-ups and fruit snacks. When choosing fruit snacks, pick ones that are made with 100 percent fruit and are low in sugar. Small, individual-sized raisin boxes are another nutritional fruit snack that travels well in a car or by plane.

    Vegetables

    • Baby carrots, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, broccoli florets and snap peas are easy-to-eat vegetables that do well on trips. Keep the children's ages in mind if bringing celery and carrots, as they do pose a choking threat.
