Boston Packing Lists

What you need to pack for a trip to Boston depends on when you plan to visit. According to The Weather Channel, Boston is warmest in July, coldest in January, wettest in November and driest in July. Although some items are essential no matter the time of year, consider the season when you determine what clothing and shoes to pack.
  1. Walking Shoes

    • Historic monuments and cultural attractions fill every corner of Boston, and in order to experience the unique attributes of this city, plan to spend time walking around. Boston's cobblestones can be hard on your feet, so comfortable closed-toe walking shoes, whether they be sneakers, flats or boots, are recommended so that you can maximize your time exploring the city.

    Umbrella

    • Rain is possible during every season, but don't let it stop you from experiencing all of Boston's tourist attractions and shopping locations, many of which are outside. Walking the Freedom Trail, browsing the shops on Newberry Street and looking at restaurant menus in the North End are all possible during a storm, but you will need an umbrella. Pack a compact umbrella rather than purchase one.

    The Right Outerwear

    • During the fall and winter, Boston's temperatures drop. According to The Weather Channel, the high temperatures in Boston average in the '30s and '40s from November through March. A warm coat, scarf, hat and gloves will keep you protected from the biting cold.

Fairer weather in the spring and summer, Boston's prime tourist seasons, allows for lighter clothing; however, you should still pack a light sweater or jacket for cool nights.

    Camera

    • You will be awed by all of the "firsts" you see in Boston--the first public school, the first park in the United States, the site of the first major Revolutionary War battle--so bring a camera to capture your experiences.

    Clothing

    • If you are visiting during the fall and winter, pack a long sleeved shirt, sweater, long pants and extra socks to remain comfortable and protected from inclement weather.

Pack lighter clothing during the spring and summer months, but be prepared with at least one heavier outfit for low temperatures at night and the chance of a cooler day.
