How to Get a Passport When You Turn 17

In the wake of 9/11 security measures have made traveling more complicated. Even travel across the border now requires a passport. When applying for a passport, there are different requirements for 16- and 17-year-olds. Even at 17 years old, you or your child is still considered a minor, and required to apply for a passport in person. Remember, it can take up to six weeks to get your passport.

  1. How to Aquire a Passport at 17

      Download and fill out the DS-11 form found at the U.S. Department of the State website. The form requires your Social Security number. Do not sign the document until you turn it into the acceptance agent. He or she will ask you to sign the document in their presence. Be prepared to show your Social Security card to the agent.

      Take passport photos. You will need to submit two passport photos to the agent. Photos should be 2x2 in dimension.

      Find a passport acceptance facility. You can use the U.S. Department of the State website to find an office near your home. Visit the facility at least six weeks before your trip.

      Bring required documents. You must bring the completed DS-11 form, proof of U.S. citizenship, current I.D., a photocopy of your Identification document, money for the fee and two passport photos.

      Submit all documents to the agent and sign your DS-11 form. If you are 17, you must apply for your passport in person, and a parent or guardian must be present. If you do not have current identification, your parents must bring a photocopy of theirs.
