How to Get a Passport Picture That Is Approved?

Every passport requires a photo of the passport holder. The U.S. Department of State has specific requirements for passport photos. Passport photos that don't meet these requirements will not be approved, and the passport application will need to be resubmitted with new photos. The fee for a passport book is $110 and passport cards cost $30 (as of 2011). These fees are non-refundable. If your photos cause your application not to be approved, you will need to pay the full fee to resubmit new photos with your new application.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a picture in color. Black and white photos are not acceptable for passports.

    • 2

Take a picture in front of a white or off-white background. Colored backgrounds aren't acceptable for passport photos.

    • 3

Wear normal street attire for the passport photo, not uniforms or formal wear. Don't wear hats, any headgear that obscures your hairline or sunglasses. If you normally wear subscription glasses, a hearing aid, wig or other article, wear them for the passport photo.

    • 4

Face the camera and take a full head shot. There should be no more than 1 to 1 and 3/8 inches between the top of your head to the bottom of your chin on the photo.

    • 5

Print two copies of the passport picture on thin, photo-quality paper. Both copies must be submitted, unattached, with the passport application.
