Obtaining a British Passport

If you're a Brit who's itching for a foreign holiday, you'll need a passport to enter your destination countries. Although Great Britain has plenty of sights to enjoy, it is a relatively small country. Most sizable holidays will probably take you across foreign borders where authorities will want you to show them your passport. The U.K. government makes the process quick and straightforward, though you'll need to arrange an interview to finalize everything.

      Pick up a passport application from a local post office with a Passport Check and Send service, or request an application by post at direct.gov.uk. Alternatively, fill out an online application.

      Complete the passport application, except for section 10, and sign at the bottom. Save section 10 for later. If applying online, you must wait for the Identity and Passport Service to print out your completed form and mail it to you, then sign and return it with all of your supporting documents.

      Take or find two passport-sized photographs of yourself. It They cannot be more than 1 month old and they must be identical. They must be color photos in which you are facing the camera, mouth closed, without anything obscuring your face--not even hair or shadows. Many common shops have photo booths where you can take inexpensive passport photos and have them printed within minutes, including Tesco, Boots, ASDA and Sainsbury's.

      Provide your birth certificate and U.K. national identity card to prove your British nationality. Alternatively, provide your naturalization certificate.

      Enlist the help of a British passport holder who has known you for at least two years to complete section 10 of the passport application. He or she must not live with you and must not be a partner or relative. Ask him or her to countersign for you and verify that your photograph is a true likeness of you. Have him or her seal your application, photographs, documents and fee inside your envelope for submission.

      Attend an interview with British authorities to verify your identity when prompted. You should receive a letter in the post asking you to attend one, after your passport has been reviewed.
