Can You Get Into Canada Without a Birth Certificate?

Since the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. has implemented a number of border control measures as a safeguard against further terrorist attacks. Such precautions include stricter customs control on the border between the U.S. and Canada.
  1. Proper Documentation

    • As of June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens must provide one of the following travel documents when travelling by land or sea between the U.S. and Canada: U.S. Passport, U.S. Passport Card, Enhanced Driver's License, or Trusted Traveler Program Cards.

    U.S. Passport

    • Accepted for international travel by air, land, and sea, the U.S. Passport validates identity and nationality.

    U.S. Passport Card

    • Valid only for travel by land and sea, this limited-use document costs less than a U.S. Passport and can conveniently fit in your wallet.

    Enhanced Driver's License

    • Designed for travel from Canada into the U.S., this special driver's license verifies identity and citizenship.

    Trusted Traveler Program Cards

    • Valid for travel by land or sea, these NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST enrollment cards are available only to pre-approved, low-risk travelers for speedy entry into the country.

    Special Note

    • U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 16 who arrive by land or sea from contiguous territory may instead provide an original or copy of a her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.
