Alaska Eco Tours

Eco-tourism is defined in two different ways. First, it is travel to areas of interest primarily to observe and learn about the environment you are traveling to, with a particular stress on low-impact traveling. In other words, having as little effect on the environment as possible. The second definition involves travel to exotic areas to enjoy the natural use of the area you are visiting, including fishing and camping in a primitive fashion.
  1. Alaska Eco-Cruises

    • The Eco-Cruises take guests on a tour of some of Alaska's most scenic waterways.

An Alaskan eco-cruise is not taken on a typical cruise-ship sized boat. The cruises offered by the Alaska Charters company take you on a journey in Alaska's Inside Passage, a waterway that winds through mountains and glaciers. The Alaska Charters company also features tours through Tracy Arm, a fjord which is a smaller waterway that features close looks at glaciers and icebergs that line the banks. Unlike the strict first definition of eco-tours, these cruises allow participants to fish for salmon and crab.

    Alaska Eco-Boating

    • Eco-Boating tours can be done in kayaks, canoes or rafts.

Eco-Boating in Alaska can involve canoes, kayaks or rafts. The Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge offers canoeing on the Alatna River and it's own lake. Guests are flown up river and put in inflatable canoes that will follow a gentle current meaning that it is almost an effortless trip.

The tour of Iniakuk Lake takes the guest on a meandering tour on three rivers that wind through areas with grizzly bears, moose and other wildlife.

    Alaska Eco-Flightseeing

    • In Alaska, the twin engine plane is as common as the yellow school buses in most American cities. The term flight-seeing refers to the tours from float-planes, that can land on water. Tour a river from a few hundred feet in the air at 100 mph, land on a river and eat lunch while watching caribou or moose eating their lunch. You will fly over mountain ranges, lush forests, rivers and lakes. Land in a remote area for some fishing in a rarely fished area. Bring your camera because you will see the wilderness areas that few tourists get to see. The Lake Iniakuk Wilderness Lodge is just one of the companies to offer the flight-seeing eco-tours.

    Eco-Hiking Tours

    • Your hiking eco-tour will include views of mountains, valleys and wildlife.

Hiking through the Brooks Range area starts at an altitude of just 700 feet above sea level up to the path's highest point at 4,000 feet higher. If hiking to higher altitudes is your goal, set a path for Mount Chamberlain which towers over the region at 9,000 feet above sea level. Anadyr Adventures is one of the many companies that offer hiking tours and camping tours through Alaska's remote forestry.

There are paths for the beginning as well as for the experienced hiker. Much of the path is above the tree-line so you will have a clear view of the area valleys and a virtual 360 degree sight-line. You may see some caribou and some dall sheep climbing with you. Other areas to hike include the Gates of the Arctic National Park and the Continental Divide. Part of the package for eco-hiking tours include lodging at a nearby cabin depending on which location you choose to hike in.
