Develop a budget. If you haven't already done so, make a plan as to how much you can afford for living expenses, food and other necessities while you are abroad. An overseas job is an excellent learning experience and a great way to generate income.
Register for support. Americans living abroad should always be sure to register with the local U.S. embassy as they keep you informed of any vital information; including security threats. They are located in most major cities, and, in many cases, you can simply register with them online.
Stay flexible. Take time to learn the local history or to do some traveling. In fact, traveling within Europe or Asia is notoriously cheap so it would be foolish not to. Later on, you can wow your friends with a few amazing new tales of adventure.
Immerse yourself. Get involved with the locals, the language, and the culture where you live. Doing this can give you an experience much richer than reading a tourists' guidebook. Further, locals can give you a better insight into the best--and sometimes the cheapest--places to eat and spend time.
Embrace the global community. Locals are always curious of foreigners living abroad and, chances are, you may make a few new friends. Open yourself up to these wonderful new people and adventures as you are sure to look back on them fondly.
