Pentwater is located on Lake Michigan's shoreline in Oceana county in western Michigan. Although small -- it has a population of about 1000 (as of the 2000 census) and covers 1.6 square miles -- Pentwater is a vacation mecca during the summer, drawing crowds from large regional cities like Chicago, Detroit, Toledo and Cleveland. Vacationers go there to fish, shop, boat and enjoy the sunny beaches. It is also a cultural center with art galleries, the Pentwater Civic Band, the Scottville Clown Band and Pentwater's high school band which has played at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Memorial. Here are some weekly, monthly and annual events you can attend in September in Pentwater and its vicinity.

The Apple & BBQ Festival is held annually in mid-September in the business district of Pentwater's sister city, Silver Lake Sand Dunes. This festival includes a BBQ competition sanctioned and judged by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, the worlds largest society of BBQ fans. The cookoff draws competitors and enthusiasts from around the country. You'll find many tents selling possibly the best BBQ you have ever tasted. There is also an apple pie contest, so for dessert you can sample some of the finest homemade apple pie you will find anywhere. When you have had enough to eat, you can browse the apple and craft sale, the auto and truck show and the dune buggy show. This is a very large and popular fall festival with more than enough to keep the whole family happy.
