Professional football players spend the summer months training for the coming season, and in Houston, younger players can take advantage of their time away from school by enrolling in football camps. These camps are independent of school leagues and are run by various coaches and trainers. Football camps are designed to help youth players improve their overall skills and possibly even receive tips from professional players.
The Steve Slaton Football Camp is an overnight/commuter camp for both seasoned and beginner players in the Houston area. There are three daily, on-field practices, during which students receive instruction and see demonstrations put on by Slaton and other Houston Texans players. Attendees learn offensive and defensive techniques from a highly-qualified coaching staff. The camp ends with an awards ceremony for all age groups. Students ages 15 to 18 have the added possibility of being named to the Top 30 Club and have a detailed information packet sent to 1, 500 college coaches to help them with their future football career.

All staff members are required to follow the camp’s philosophy of creating a safe and positive learning environment for the campers. The coaches include NFL players and college coaches from around the country who are trained in Offense-Defense’s teaching methodology. The days are divided into three parts: offensive training in the morning, afternoon defensive training sessions and an evening scrimmage. Players are divided into age, size and skill levels, so both new and returning players benefit from the instruction.
