California Federal Campgrounds

California is home to hundreds of federal campgrounds, from the beaches along the coast to the mountain ranges in the western part of the state. Visitors can enjoy the various activities that can be found in California's rolling hills, steep valleys, numerous rivers and snow-capped peaks. Campground activities include hiking, mountain biking, boating and swimming.

  1. Big Pine Canyon Campgrounds

    • Big Pine Canyon Campgrounds sits next to Big Pine Creek in the Inyo National Forest. The campground is located in the stream bottom of a narrow canyon and is surrounded by mountains. It includes two group campsites: Palisade Glacier and Clyde Glacier. The Palisade campground accepts tents only. Clyde Glacier does not have electricity and is back-in only. Amenities include picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills, fire rings and an on-site store. Guests may swim and fish in nearby lakes and in the creek, hike in the John Muir Wilderness, or go horseback riding.

    Aspen Group Campground

    • Aspen Group Campground is part of the Jackson Meadow complex located on the northeast side of Jackson Meadow Reservoir. The campground offers three campsites: Hill, Ridge and Spring units, which accommodate up to 100 people combined. Facilities include an on-site store, dump station, boat ramp and restrooms. The campground does not have showers or hookups. Amenities include fire rings, food lockers, grills and trailer parking. Activities include swimming, hiking, sightseeing, hunting and jet skiing. Campers need to make reservations at least three days prior to arrival.

    Black Mountain Campground

    • Black Mountain Campground is located about 15 miles from Idyllwild. The campground is located in a secluded, forested area and is designed as a group campground that can accommodate up to 100 people with up to 30 vehicles. RVs and trailers are not preferred. Amenities include fire rings, restrooms, vaulted toliets and picnic tables. Guests may picnic and hike on the grounds. Activities within 10 miles include mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking and fishing.
