Foods to Take When Camping in an RV

RV camping-- it offers the open road, travel across the country and knowing your accommodations follow you wherever you go. The trick to RV camping, however, is fitting everything in a very small space, including your food. Camping with an RV offers advantages over tent camping since you have refrigeration, but you still need to be mindful of space.

  1. Dry and Canned Goods

    • Pasta is easy to store and you don't need to worry about it spoiling.

Dry goods, such as bread, rice, beans and pasta provide energy in the form of carbohydrates. Granola, cereals, nuts and trail mixes can make great breakfasts to get you started or snack foods to take hiking and exploring. Canned fruits and vegetables offer quick fixes and good supplies of vitamins and nutrients. For protein power, don't forget peanut butter, tuna and chicken. Many canned meats are now available in more compact pouches for a space-saving option. Bread crumbs, spices, salt and pepper add flavor to foods, and when stored in plastic baggies, do not take up too much room.

    Perishables

    • Milk and eggs make great staples to have in your RV kitchen.

RV refrigerators give you the option to bring foods that might spoil like milk, cheese, eggs, lunch meat, fresh fruits and vegetable, mayonnaise, creamy salad dressings, jelly and butter. Although RV freezers tend to the small side, they allow you to store meat, ice cream, prepared stews or casseroles, frozen fruits and vegetables and, of course, ice. You may want to transfer items from original bulky packaging to baggies. Cut up meat to reduce the size.

    Beverages

    • Check the campsite you are visiting if you want to bring alcohol to see if it is allowed.

Bring bottled water in case of emergency situations. Include your favorite drinks, such as juice, sodas or beer. Powdered drink mixes added to water or juice are great space savers and often are available in single-serve sizes. Coffee and tea are easy to store and make. If you are RVing in colder weather, include hot chocolate and apple cider mix.

    Fun Foods

    • Roast marshmallows are a treat.

Even though you have a stove, refrigerator and maybe even a microwave, make room for fun foods too. Start a campfire and break out the marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers for the classic S'mores recipe. For a real crowd pleaser, cook hot dogs on sticks in an open flame. Chips and cookies make great snacks. Since you do have an oven, feel free to bake brownies or cakes.
