Paddlesteamer Cruises

The paddle boat was first introduced by Romans sometime in the fourth century A.D. The boat paddles were initially propelled by oxen and in future years by men. The Paddle Steamer boat was later invented in France around 1783. As of 2010, there are only a few companies still offering paddle steamer cruises in parts of Australia and Europe.
  1. Murray River Paddlesteamers

    • Comprised of three operational paddle steamer boats, Murray River Paddlesteamers (MRPS) is a touring company located in Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. The company was established in 1996 and offers daily cruises along the lengthy Murray River. Since the Murray is almost 1,500 miles long, MRPS offers either day-long cruises or multiple-day cruises where you will travel overnight.

Its three paddle steamer boats include the P.S. Emmylou, the P.S. Canberra and The Pride of the Murray. All cruises include meals and if traveling overnight, sleeping accommodations and washrooms. MRPS can also accommodate private party charters for weddings, reunions or other celebrations at additional cost.

    Paddle Steamer Monarch

    • The P.S. Monarch is a 12-passenger paddle steamer, and one of the only boats of its kind still operational in the United Kingdom. Time schedules vary for this paddle steamer cruise, so it's best to make contact by phone for current schedules.

The P.S. Monarch travels around UK's Newport Harbor taking in various sights along the ancient port. Passengers may bring their own food and beverages, or you may eat or drink at the onboard saloon. Cruises last approximately one hour and are available between April and October.

    Waverley Excursions

    • Waverley offers the last of the sea-going paddle steamer excursions. Waverley's boat, the Balmoral, travels along the United Kingdom's coasts, islands and rivers. Excursion locations include Scotland's lochs, the Bristol Channel, the Thames River, the Irish Sea, the coasts of North Wales and various parts of England. Enjoy a day-trip or spend a few days visiting multiple locations, as excursion itineraries can be custom designed for passengers.

    Paddle Steamer Curlip II

    • Modeled after Australia's original Curlip I, this replica paddle steamer offers trips along Victoria's Snowy River. An area in Far East Gippsland, the boat will cruise past the local estuary and down to the mouth of the Snowy River. The Curlip II excursions travel near an abundance of local wildlife including herons, sea eagles, black swans and pelicans. Cruises last around 90 minutes and beverages are available.

    Nile River Cruises

    • In Egypt, the Voyages Jules Verne Company offers paddle steamer cruises along the Nile River. Its paddle steamer fleet consists of two boats: the SS Misr and the SS Karim. Each is a former Royal paddle steamer that has been fully restored.

There are seven-night cruises for each paddle steamer boat, and the maximum group size for each vessel is 25 to 30 passengers. You will travel close to historic Egyptian temples and palaces in addition to seeing other ancient ruins along the river.
