Types of Amtrak Trains

Amtrak train routes spread across the continental United States in an organized, daily-operating network. With these routes come different trains, some of which, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), have designs specific to the terrain which they pass over. The different types of Amtrak trains help ensure that passengers experience a comfortable and enjoyable ride.
  1. Coast Starlight

    • The Coast Starlight train operates between Seattle and Los Angeles, and passes through mountain scenery near the Cascade Range and Mount Shasta. Further south, passengers can enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean coastline.

      Sleeping cars, a dining car and an arcade room comprise some of the amenities. The daily route takes approximately 35 hours.

    Empire Builder

    • The Empire Builder runs between Chicago and Portland, Ore. Parts of this train route take passengers through landscapes along the Lewis and Clark trail in the western U.S. The Empire Builder includes a dining car, with sleeping cars potentially available.

      A full-length trip usually takes 46 hours.

    California Zephyr

    • The California Zephyr train operates between San Francisco and Chicago. Scenery along the way includes the Rocky and Sierra Nevada mountain ranges, with trip amenities including sleeping cars and a dining car.

      The typical full-length trip lasts 51 hours and 20 minutes.

    Acela Express

    • The Acela Express trains cater to business commuters with stops at Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Amenities include business class and first class seating, with a snack car and a "quiet car."

      A full-length trip usually lasts seven hours.

    Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited

    • The Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited trains serve the southern U.S. The Texas Eagle runs between Los Angeles and Chicago, with stops at Tucson, San Antonio, Dallas and St. Louis.

      A Chicago to San Antonio trip runs daily and lasts approximately 32 hours and 25 minutes, and a San Antonio to Los Angeles trip runs three times a week and lasts about 65 hours and 20 minutes

      The Sunset Limited runs a similar route between Los Angeles and New Orleans, operating three times a week with the full trip duration lasting about 48 hours.
