The Orient Express may be the most famous train in history, and can serve as inspiration for your own train decor. The train has run through various countries in Europe, so consider decorating each car of your train (up to as many as applicable) for each area, such as Hungary, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania. Use the country's flags, native flowers and plants, images of the most popular food and drink exports, famous historical figures and celebrities and dolls dressed in traditional garb in each car of the train.
Use Hollywood's focus on trains to inspire your own train decor. Whether you devote a different car to movie decor or create a running theme guests can explore by going from car to car, some of Hollywood's biggest movies can serve as a launching spot for train inspiration. Consider the holiday movie "The Polar Express." While the movie was computer animated, you still can get ideas from the film, including using images of the characters, plus decorate with a Christmas theme. Another popular comedy, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," featured characters attempting to get to their destination via all of these modes of transportation. You can deck out your cars to look like an airplane or automobile and have artwork made up to show how much more efficient and comfortable train travel would be over those other options.
Depending on the location of your train, your city or its neighbors may be the home base to a number of major league or smaller league sports teams. Show your support by decorating the cars with sports equipment (consider asking the team to donate old, used items), advertisements, jerseys, helmets and other goods with their colors and logos. For example, if your train serves the greater New York area, you could fill cars with items from the Yankees and Mets (major league baseball), Nets (basketball), Giants (football) and Rangers (hockey). Consider devoting one car per team (you can even let guests request seats in "The Yankees Car") or promoting the entire state by mixing paraphernalia throughout the entire train.
