South Myrtle Beach Campgrounds

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, draws more than 14 million visitors per year to its 60 miles of sandy beaches, dozens of quality golf courses and other outdoor tourist attractions. Myrtle Beach also has a bustling night life and several historical landmarks. There are several campgrounds in Myrtle Beach. On the south side of town there are three, in particular, that provide not only campsites but a wealth of amenities that make them feel more like a hotel.
  1. Lakewood Camping Resort

    • Lakewood Campground is the largest campground in Myrtle Beach, with more than 1,100 campsites on its Kings Highway location on the south side of town. Lakewood is set on the beach near the Atlantic Ocean and has served the area for more than 50 years, according to its website. The campsites can accommodate RVs, campers and tents, and the campground features Internet access, bath houses, laundry facilities, pools, a propane refill station and a coffee house. Pets are welcome (if they are not aggressive breeds, such as German Shepherds or Rottweilers), and the campground also has its own grocery store. The campground also rents golf carts, bicycles, paddle boats, kayaks and canoes for family activities. Just down the road on Kings Highway is Myrtle Beach State Park, where you can fish, picnic, ride horses, walk nature trails and learn about nature in the park's education center.

    Ocean Lakes Family Campground

    • The Ocean Lakes Family Campgrounds has earned awards from the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds as the nation's RV Park of the Year, according to its website. There are nearly 900 campsites at Ocean Lakes, with some that can accommodate RVs that are 50 feet long. Campers with tents are also allowed to set up on RV sites. All campsites have water and sewer access, electrical hookups, cable TV hookups, phone jacks and daily trash service. It's important to know that Ocean Lakes recommends making a reservation 18 months in advance. The campsite also offers easy access to the nearby beach. Myrtle Beach is home to Ripley's Aquarium, where there are more than 85,000 square feet of exhibits on fish and other marine life.

    PirateLand Family Camping Resort

    • PirateLand bills itself as Myrtle Beach's "premier oceanfront campground," according to its website. PirateLand has its own recreation center, lazy river and pool, and easy access to the beach area. Campers can set up in RVs or in tents on one of PirateLand's hundreds of campsites. PirateLand has its own bathhouse, propane refill station, Internet access, 24-hour security and a laundry facility. PirateLand even furnishes lifeguards for the beach. One of Myrtle Beach's most popular attractions is Brookgreen Gardens, which is devoted to preserving the area's natural plant and water life. Brookgreen is on the National Historical Register and is well-known for its collection of figurative sculptures.
