RV Campgrounds Near Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is a famous summer resort city that is located on an island in the state of Rhode Island. Visitors are drawn to Newport to see its many attractions, including mansions, the Newport Naval Station, sailing races and music festivals. The Newport area is a mecca for fishing, boating and sailing. RV campgrounds are not located in this upscale city itself, but there are several available 20 minutes or less from downtown.
  1. Worden Pond Family Campground

    • The Worden Pond Family Campground is in Wakefield, approximately 18 miles southeast of Newport. The RV sites have electric hookups with 20- and 30-amp connections as well as water hookups. All the sites have fire rings and picnic tables. Less than 15 minutes from the Rhode Island beaches and featuring wooded sites, the campground has restrooms, coin-operated showers and a dump station. Ice, soda and firewood are for sale. The campground also has public phones and a spot that has Internet access. On-site recreational activities include fishing and sailing on the pond, volleyball, basketball, horseshoes and a playground. Live musical entertainment is occasionally offered at its pavilion.

    Fort Getty Park

    • Five miles west of Newport in the town of Jamestown, Fort Getty Park is open from the middle of May to early October. The park has 105 RV sites. On the grounds are a dump station, boat ramp, boat dock, restrooms, showers and public phones. Fishing, volleyball, horseshoes and swimming are among the recreational activities in a park that is located along the water and has a rocky beach. The park also has a nature trail and a salt marsh. Guests can also opt to stay on tent sites. A pavilion is on the grounds as well, although this can only be leased by residents of Jamestown.

    Melville Ponds Campground

    • The Melville Ponds Campground is nine miles north of Newport in Portsmouth. Owned and operated by the town of Portsmouth, the campground is open from April 1 until Oct. 31. It has 68 sites for RVs and 60 more for tents. Amenities on the grounds include restrooms, showers, a playground, campfire areas and a store that sells limited goods. The RV sites have water and electric hookups. The campground has 150 wooded acres that include wetlands, ponds and brooks. Popular recreational pursuits included hiking on its multiple trails, fishing and wildlife watching.
