How to Shrink a Stretched Tent

Putting away camping materials is like a jigsaw puzzle. Everything has its place in the car or a backpack and it must fit in precisely or it will cause a space problem. A properly shrunk tent will comfortably fit into the puzzle and will avoid problems of closing the door or the pack.

Instructions

Push out all air pockets that remain inside the flattened tent. Get on your knees and push down on the tent with hands and forearms and move forward chase the air out of the tent. Air bubbles make the tent bulky and it won't fit in the bag. If the air won't leave the tent, open the zipper a little bit to allow the air to depart.

    • 2

Throw all lines or anything sticking out of the stretched tent on top of it so these items get rolled up within the tent. Don't leave items sticking out or they may get caught on other items.

    • 3

Fold the tent in half the long ways. If it's a perfectly square tent, it doesn't matter which way it is longer. Fold it in half again.

    • 4

Roll the tent carefully the long ways. Stop and push out any extra air that may have seeped back into the tent. Throw items like string and rope sticking out inside the tent. Roll slowly and tightly.

Dry out the tent when you return home the next sunny day. Take out the tent and spread it out outside and let the sun dry it off. Then reshrink it. This prevents mold and a bad smell next time you go out and camp.
