The Detroit Zoo has a number of youth activities. The zoo offers Summer Safari camps that educate children about animals. The camps are available for different age groups. Also it offers a giraffe encounter platform where children can feed giraffes. Star Jaycee Park offers several playground structures in addition to a football field, Frisbee golf course and volleyball nets. Also, the park offers train rides for kids on the first full weekend of each month.
The Royal Oak Skate Park has many membership opportunities for skaters of all ages. As of 2011, the price for unlimited monthly skating is $75. A six-month membership cost $90 and a yearlong membership costs $125. Protective gear is also available to rent. The John Lindell Ice Arena offers opportunities for hockey players to play in teams and figure skaters to practice their craft. In addition, the arena offers skating lessons.
Stagecrafters Baldwin Theatre offers a youth program for kids between the ages of 8 to 18. In this program, young people have the opportunity to learn a variety of theater skills such as lighting, choreography, costume and acting. In addition, the school also offers a youth program specializing in improvisation. The Actors Workshop offers drama lessons for kids between 5 to 9 years of age. A class for ages 10 to 15 is also offered. The Creative Arts Studio offers art camps and art classes for kids.
First opened in 1980, the Aquarium Shop has a wide array of fish on display to purchase or enjoy. It sells freshwater and saltwater fish as well as stingrays. The fish are kept in glass tanks for easy viewing. For those with toddlers, the Royal Oak Michigan Toddler Playgroup organizes arts and crafts activities in addition to outdoor activities for kids between the ages of 2 to 3.
