State Parks & Historical Sites in Georgia

The state of Georgia features 77,500 acres with a rich diverse geography within. In the northern region there are mountains, in the southern region there are miles of coast and beaches, and in between there are gentle slopes and hills. Georgia was established as a colony back in 1733 and it has established a rich culture and history ever since. Within the state there are more than 60 state parks and numerous historic sites. Each of them offers a variety of plant life, geographic uniqueness and a rich history.
  1. Amicalola Falls State Park

    • Amicalola Falls State Park is situated in the northern region of Georgia, in the Appalachian Mountains, boasting waterfalls and lush green foliage that which support a vast array of wildlife. The waterfall in this park tumble a cascading 729 feet and is known as the tallest cascading waterfall in the eastern half of the United States. Amicalola Falls State Park offers lodging for guests who are interested in staying overnight.

    Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site

    • Located just off of highway 75 in Cartersville, Georgia is the Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site. This historic site features six earthen mounds that have been dated all the way back to the year 1000 A.D., being the best preserved cultural historic site in the eastern half of the United States. The site includes a museum with detailed information on the site history and culture from between 500 and 1,000 years ago.

    Fort Morris State Historic Site

    • Fort Morris State Historic Site is situated in Midway, Georgia. Before British settlers arrived to this site it was the a village consisting of Guale Indians. An on-site museum offers displays of the life of the Guale tribe, their culture and way of life more than 250 years ago and the historic American Revolution, which pushed them out of their former home.

    Fort McAllister State Historic Park

    • Fort McAllister State Historic Park sits next to the Great Ogeechee River in the Richmond Hill, Georgia area. This state park is a landmark for many events of the Civil War, where the earthwork located there was attacked seven times. It was eventually captured through the works of General Sherman in the year 1864. A civil war museum is located on the park grounds and features a vast array of artifacts. An RV campground is available for overnighters.
