Tourism Around Gallatin, Tennessee

"Weather beautiful. Yanks behaving like human beings with a few exceptions." These are the words of 16 year-old Alice Williamson, a resident of Gallatin, Tennessee during the Union occupation during the Civil War. Gallatin and the surrounding area is a tourist destination because of its rich history, preserved Civil War-era buildings and great outdoors. Nashville is also a half-hour drive south of Gallatin.
  1. Trousdale Place

    • Trousdale Place is a two-story brick home built around 1813 on land given to James Trousdale, an army captain, as a reward for service in the Revolutionary War. This house is on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Tennessee Civil War Trail. The Trousdale Place is open for tours, but only by appointment.

    Sumner County Museum

    • Sumner County Museum was built in the 1970s and is located just adjacent to the Trousdale Place historical home. This museum exhibits Native American artifacts from the tribes who once resided in the area (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Creek, Shawnee and Iroquois), war memorabilia from the Revolutionary and World Wars, Gallatin's original first fire engine and a blacksmith shop. The museum is open every day from 9:30 to 4:30 (1:30 to 4:30 on Sundays) and admission is a nominal fee.

    Bledsoe Creek State Park

    • Bledsoe Creek State Park lies on 164 acres of land on the outskirts of Gallatin. Visitors may undertake boating, camping, fishing, hiking and picnicking at this park.

    Wynnewood Wynnewood State Historical Site

    • Wynnewood State Historical Site is a massive log house (the biggest log building in Tennessee), which was built in 1828. Near the house is a sulfurous spring that was revered for supposed healing properties. This site is about eight miles east of Gallatin and is open to the public from April 1 to December 31.

    Transportation and Accommodation

    • Gallatin Municipal Airport is the nearest airport, although major commercial airlines fly into nearby Nashville. Gallatin is off Highway 386, or Vietnam Veterans Blvd.

      The following major hotel chains have locations in Gallatin: Hampton Inn, Comfort Inn, Super 8, Americas Best Value Inn and Best Value Inn. There are also a number of local hotels and bed and breakfast accommodations.
