How to Renew a U.S. Passport and Attach Pictures by Mail

An adult's U.S. passport is valid for 10 years. The date of issue and the date of expiration can be found below the passport photo. It is advisable to begin the renewal process six months prior to the actual expiration. The Department of State suggests renewal by mail, which requires submitting a DS-82 form and attaching two current passport photos. The DS-82 is available online or at your local passport agency. Passport renewal typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.

  • Form DS-82
  • Black ink pen

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a local passport agency or acceptance facility to obtain the DS-82 form. If you have Internet access and printing capabilities, download the form from the U.S. Department of State's website.

    • 2

Fill out the form using a black ink pen. Sign and date the bottom of page 1 and fill in all applicable fields with true and current information.

    • 3

Staple 1 passport photo into the field provided. Do not bend the photo, and be sure you attach all 4 corners with 4 vertical staples, as close to the edges as possible.

    • 4

Write a check or obtain a money order for the amount of the passport fee (this can be found on the U.S. Department of State's website under Passport Fees). Be sure your full name and birth date appear on the check, which must be made payable to "Department of State."

    • 5

Mail the DS-82 form in a padded, weatherproof envelope, along with a check or money order for the passport fee, made payable to "Department of State." Write your full name and birth date on your check.

Include your current U.S. passport and the second passport photo, which should be identical to the one you stapled earlier. If your name has changed, include a certified copy or an unaltered photocopy of a marriage certificate or court order showing a seal and judge's signature. This document will be returned once your passport renewal is processed.
