How to Renew a Dominican Commonwealth Passport in Canada

Given the tropical climate, the friendly citizens and the relative ease of obtaining dual citizenship and a secondary passport, it's no wonder the Dominican Republic is a popular retirement destination for Canadians. Old-style Dominican passports were handwritten--which raised eyebrows at border crossings. But all passports issued since 2006 are machine printed and easily scanned, allowing visa-free entry to more than 90 other countries; giving passport holders the chance to explore previously unobtainable opportunities for employment, housing and banking in the Caribbean and around the world. If you are in possession of a handwritten Dominican Republic passport, or if your old one has expired or is about to expire, you will need a renew it. The passport-renewal procedure is outlined below.

    • 3

Obtain two passport-style photographs. They must be 2 by 2 inches with a white background. Your ears must be clearly observable in the photograph, so pull your hair back if you must. Photographs in which earrings are visible in any piercing will not be accepted, so it is best to remove your jewelry prior to having your picture taken.

Secure a certified check, cashier's check or money order for the amount of $80 for the passport. This amount is subject to change.

    • 5

Secure a certified check, cashier's check or money order for the amount of $35 for the delivery of the documents to the Dominican Republic. This amount is subject to change.

Gather the following items: your old passport, a government-issued identification card with your picture, and notarized certificates of marriage or divorce if you name has changed. If you are under the age of 18 you will also need to bring your birth certificate and your parent's passports. Take them with you to the consulate.

    • 7

Go to the consulate at the appointed time and obtain a passport renewal form.

    • 8

Fill out the form and give it, along with your money orders, old passport, identification and supporting documents to a consulate employee.

    • 9

Wait 30 minutes to 1 hour to receive your new passport (the current average wait time is subject to change based on the level of consulate activity).
