How to Apply for a Student Visa

A visa is a legal certificate that grants international visitors permission to enter a foreign country. It allows you to stay in a foreign destination for different lengths of time depending on the specific visa for which you qualify. A student visa allows you the opportunity to study abroad as a temporary resident of a particular country. It provides a great way to pursue education while experiencing a new culture. The application process for a student visa will differ with each destination but can be applied for in a similar fashion.

Instructions

Locate the Embassy or Consulate of the country you're planning to visit. Use an online resource like Embassies Abroad (see Resources) or the government section of a phonebook to find the facility nearest you. Call the office in your jurisdiction and ask if you should apply for a student visa in person or by mail.

    • 2

Complete an application for a student type visa. Obtain the form during an appointment at the Consulate, or check your destination's Embassy website to see if it is available for download. Often times you can only access it online.

    • 3

Present a valid passport and at least one recent passport photo 2-by-2 inches in size, taken against a light colored background. It must be a frontal portrait of the face, without eyeglasses or anything worn on the head. Ask if your designated Consular offers a photo service, or otherwise obtain your photos by other professional means.

    • 4

Organize the necessary evidence documentation requested from the Consulate of the country you wish to visit. At the very least, you will be required to provide a proof of citizenship, proof of accommodation, proof of income, or proof of education. These may be presented in the form of a driver's license, birth certificate, utility bill, and most commonly for students, an official letter from the university you will be attending.

    • 5

Be prepared to submit to any special requirements regarding health, which will vary based on the country of interest. Certain nations with increased health risks will require that you possess a Yellow Card certificate with your passport, and territories like the United Kingdom require all visitors to supply biometric data through a 10-digit fingerprint scan and a digital photo at a local Consulate.

    • 6

Return or mail your application and travel materials to the appropriate location. A travel agent can assist you with finding a courier to deliver your documents to a Consulate if you are unable to reach one yourself. Just provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope if you would like your student visa received by post. Same day and expedited service are usually available at an additional charge. Visa fees vary with your local currency, but can be made payable to the Consulate office at which you are applying.
