How to Apply for a Student Visa in USA

Applying for a U.S. student visa is lengthy process that requires specific documentation as well as key financial and educational information. While the process is not arduous, it can be slightly overwhelming if the applicant is not familiar with the requirements. Before you apply for a student visa, familiarize yourself with the process.

      Verify that the school you are planning to attend is registered with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS,) an online database for student visa recipients. A fee (SEVIS I-901) is required for each program of study, regardless of the number of programs that will be taken while in the USA.

      Provide the appropriate documentation with your application: form I-20A-B, Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant (F-1); Student Status for Academic and Language Students, or Form I-20M-N; Certificate of Eligibility for Non-immigrant (M-1); and Student Status for Vocational Students. Your spouse and/or dependent(s) must sign the form as well as the participating school. Attach the appropriate financial and educational records, including transcripts and test scores.

      Submit a Non-immigrant Visa Applicant (form DS-156) with a form DS-158. Sign and date each form and return then to the Bureau of Consulary Affairs, or submit an e-form application. Submit a hard copy application to:

      Complete the interview. Prepare to be fingerprinted and have your photo taken. You must also show a valid passport and provide a 2-by-2 inch photo.

      Pay the student visa application fee and retain the receipt for your records. Fees will vary, so ask for a fee schedule when you apply.
