How to Fly a Dog to Puerto Rico

The regulations for flying with a dog to Puerto Rico are the same as flying to anywhere within the continental Unites States or Alaska. Hawaii has much stricter regulations than other areas. It can be a hassle to fly with a pet and the conditions can at times be unsafe for your dog. If you need to fly your dog to Puerto Rico, be sure to follow all of the regulations before boarding the plane.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your dog to the vet. Let your veterinarian know that you will be flying your dog to Puerto Rico. Plan the checkup for about 10 days before flying to ensure your dog is healthy enough to undergo the journey.

    • 2

Contact the airline. Advise the carrier prior to your flight that you will be bringing your dog.

    • 3

Get your dog tested for all diseases that humans can catch. Obtain copies of the test results.

    • 4

Update your dog's rabies vaccination or obtain a copy of a current certificate. You need to have your dog vaccinated at least 30 days before flying.

    • 5

Bring all of the paperwork with you to the airport. Have at least a few copies of each document.

    • 6

Crate your dog before flying. Small dogs and puppies can be brought as your carry-on luggage and kept in the cabin with you. Larger dogs will be put in the plane with the luggage. The crate should allow your dog enough space to stand, turn and lie down. The crate should have a locking door and be made of sturdy metal. Make sure your dog is used to the crate or carrying case before you travel.

    • 7

Book a direct flight only. Choose a morning or evening flight if traveling in warm weather. This ensures that the cargo area does not get too hot for your dog.

    • 8

Put two ID tags on your dog's collar. One should contain your name, address and phone number at home, and the second should contain your name and a contact phone number in Puerto Rico.
