For travel to and from the United States and Canada (and certain countries in South and Central America), the checked baggage allowance is per piece based on size and weight (with a two-piece maximum) and varies by the type of ticket purchased. For economy class, each piece must not exceed 62 inches in the sum of its three dimensions and a weight of 50 pounds. For evergreen deluxe and elite class, each piece also has a sum of 62 inches but a maximum weight of 61 pounds. Super business and premium class also includes a sum of 62 inches per bag, but with additional benefits such as a 70-pound weight limit for each piece and one extra bag limited to 50 pounds without charge.
For travel to and from countries other than North America (and certain countries in South and Central America), the checked baggage allowance is by weight only (with a two-piece maximum) and varies by the type of ticket purchased. For economy and evergreen deluxe, each piece must not exceed 44 pounds. For elite class, each piece must not exceed 55 pounds while super business and premium class allows a maximum weight of 66 pounds per piece.
Checked baggage in excess of the free allowance will be charged additional fees. According to EVA Airlines, details for baggage fees based on the piece system (size and weight) are provided by contacting the airline. Fees based solely on weight vary by the route and final destination but generally, 1.5 percent of the highest normal direct one-way economy fare is multiplied by each extra pound exceeding the free baggage allowance. Exceptions include: 1.35 percent for travel within Europe, 1.0 percent for travel from Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Israel, Australia and New Zealand and 1.5 percent for travel from Australia or New Zealand to the Southwest Pacific.
Carry-on baggage, limited to one piece with a maximum weight of 15 pounds and a total dimension of 45 inches, is permitted only if stowed in the overhead bin or under the seat. The airline also allows one additional personal item (without an extra charge) from a list that includes: laptop, purse, small backpack, briefcase, and camera case. Reasonable allowances of a coat, hat, scarf or other miscellaneous items are also included.
