How to Clean Rub Rails

A rub rail is the guard rail on the boat's hull side. It functions to protect the boat from contact with pilings and docks. As such, the rub rail comes into contact with debris, and over time the debris will stick to the rub rail. You can easily remove the debris and return the rub rail to its shiny polish with any array of boat cleaner solution or metal polish. However, you should never use the solution on vinyl; apply only soap and water to the vinyl components.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with one area of the boat and tackle the rub rail in small sections at a time.

    • 2

Spray a boat cleaner solution or metal polish onto the surface of the rub rail, or apply some to a damp sponge or cloth.

    • 3

Wipe the rub rails with the cloth until the area is clean and free of stains, grease, grime or any other debris that may have accumulated during the course of your sailing.

    • 4

Brush the vinyl with a stiff bristle brush to remove grimy debris. Dip a sponge into a bucket of soapy water and wash the area, rinsing it thoroughly. Wait for the area to dry.

    • 5

Repeat the process for the rub rails on the entire boat.
