How to Figure the Distance Between Cities

If you plan to travel in the near future, one of the first things you might want to determine is the distance between the two cities. Determining distance can help you calculate the time that it will take to get to your destination. Many online websites can help you calculate this information quickly, they also often provide alternate routes to avoid toll roads or highways.

Instructions

  1. Google Maps

      Pull up the Google Maps website and type in the name of your destination city and select "Search Maps." For example, write: Buffalo, NY.

      Locate the "Directions" hyperlink on the left side of the screen, and select it.

      Type in the name of the starting city in the left-hand box next to the "A," and press "Get Directions." For example, type Fairfax, VA. The mileage is listed on the left side of the screen underneath "Suggested Routes." In this sample, the mileage between Fairfax, VA and Buffalo, NY is 386 miles via US-219 and 435 miles via I-83 N and US-15 N.

    Mapquest

      Pull up Mapquest's webpage, and select the "Directions" tab.

      Type the city and state information into the "Start" and "End" destination boxes. Select "Get Map." For example write: Beverly Hills, CA and Seattle, WA.

      Select "Get Map." The end result between the two cities is 1135.07 miles.

    Yahoo Maps

      Pull up the Yahoo Maps webpage.

      Type in the start and end information for the city and state on the left hand corner. For example type Cleveland, OH and Nashville, TN.

      Select "Go." The distance is on the line labeled "Trip Distance." In this example, the distance is 521.91 miles.
