A long-established vacation destination, the city of Hiawassee is in Northeast Georgia along the Hiawassee River. Throughout the 19th century, wealthy tourists often visited the area in summer to escape the hot, crowded cities. Hiawassee is now a popular camping retreat for people from all backgrounds. Campgrounds in the area offer a number of activities designed to appeal to vacationing families.
Riverbend Campground is an RV campsite situated on the Hiawassee River. Area attractions include hiking, shopping, dinning and golf. The Crane Creek winery and Wolf Mountain Vineyards & Winery are nearby. Also close by are a music hall, art galleries, a cinema, casino and the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. The campground features fishing for bass, brim, trout and hybrids. There is also and outdoor swimming pool, volleyball court and horseshoe pitch. A playground is available for younger children. River activities include tubing, canoeing and kayaking.
Bald Mountain Camping Resort has cabins available for rent as well as RV hookups. The resort is near Lake Chatuge, with a trout stream running through the campsite and other streams nearby. All this water offers plenty of opportunities for boating, water skiing and fishing. Hiking trails are also convenient to the resort. Cabins with one, two and three rooms are available; larger cabins have either a kitchen or kitchenette. Cabins and RV hookup sites feature cable television and wireless Internet access. An on-site playground includes slides, a merry-go-round, teeter-totters and swings. The game room has pool tables, along with air hockey, pinball and video game machines. There are also basketball and volleyball courts, shuffleboards, a swimming pool, softball field and miniature golf course. Recreational activities include paddle boating and kayaking.
Catering mostly to families, retirees, RV owners and motorcycle enthusiasts, the Appalachian Campground is in close proximity to restaurants, shopping and golf. It is next to the Hiawassee River, offering easy access to boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Larger cabins are designed to sleep 8 to 10 people. They each feature a screened porch, two bathrooms, three bedrooms, a kitchen, den, dining area and fireplace. Cabins that sleep two adults are also available. Guests can also pitch tents and camp outdoors. The campground is only minutes from several hiking areas, including the Appalachian Trail and Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest point.
