Nisswa is a small town in central Minnesota located nearby Brainerd and Gull Lake. As of July 2008, the population was 2,110. The city is a popular tourist destination, with several theme parks and resorts both in the city and in the surrounding area.

In nearby Baxter is Three Bear Lodge Water & Theme Park. This year-round indoor facility includes rides, games and water rides such as a 300-foot tube slide, a 300-foot body slide and an activity pool with basketball hoops, an animal water walk and a floatable snake. For the lovers of nature, Crow Wing State Park is located near Nisswa. The park features opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing and canoeing on the Mississippi River. The park also had several historical sites, and opportunities for wildlife observation. The park is located 9 miles from Brainerd on Highway 371, and then down County Road 27 for 1 mile.

Another option for nature lovers is Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, located in Onamia. The park offers guided nature enjoyment programs but also has numerous options for independent hiking. Visitors can enjoy the view from a 100-foot fire tower and enjoy camping, hiking, and swimming. The park features a swimming beach with canoes or rowboats for rent. In winter, the park has trails for cross-country skiing or sledding.
