Airline Regulations on National Flights

Competitive air fares make traveling by air a quick and affordable way to reach your destination. One consideration to air travel is transporting special equipment such as hunting and camping gear or other sports accessories. Knowing airline regulations regarding what to bring and how to pack it can save delays caused by security searches and streamline your journey.
  1. Luggage

    • Sports teams, outdoors enthusiasts and craftspeople often need to transport potentially dangerous equipment related to their interests. Firearms, sharp objects, tools and sporting equipment can be packed in your checked luggage, according to Title 49 § 1544.205 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Sharp objects such as scissors, knives or axes should be sheathed and carefully packaged to prevent possible injury to baggage handlers. Guns may be checked, provided they are unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container. Black powder, percussion caps or other explosive or flammable substances are not allowed to be transported; however bullets are permitted in their original boxes.

    Carry-Ons

    • Packing your carry-on bag to comply with § 1544.203 of the FCR can streamline your trip through the airport. Scissors less than four inches long can be included in your bag, as well as travel-size bottles of shampoo, lotions and other sundry items. All sundries must be in a 3.4 ounce bottle or smaller, and placed in a quart-size clear plastic bag for easy inspection. Baby formula or medications in reasonable amounts are acceptable, but must be declared at the checkpoint. Electronic equipment such as cell phones and laptops are allowed to be carried on board, providing they do not emit radio frequencies which could interfere with flight equipment. Extra batteries for the devices may be carried in your carry-on luggage.

    Screening

    • Upon arriving at the airport, FCR § 1546.207 requires passengers to present government-issued photo identification at the security checkpoint, such as driver's license or passport. Shoes, carry-on luggage and personal items are X-rayed while the passenger passes through metal detection. To expedite the process, using a laptop case without metal zippers or snaps that will interfere with the X-ray view of the computer prevents the security team from having to remove it. Avoid wearing large metal jewelry or baggy clothing, which could conceal contraband objects to minimize chances of being delayed with an individual search.
