Memphis, Texas Campgrounds

Memphis is in Hall County, Texas, and is a city that's located not too far from tent and RV campgrounds.     • About an hour from Memphis, Texas, you'll find tent and RV sites in Lake McClellan Recreation Area, which is in the 1,449-acre McClellan Creek National Grasslands in Pampa East. No more than an hour and 15 minutes from Memphis are West 40 RV Park in Shamrock and 15,313-acre Caprock Canyons State Park in Quitaque. West 40 Camp Area offers tent and full hookup sites and Caprock Canyons offers 40 backpack campsites, 40 walk-in developed tent campsites and 12 equestrian developed campsites. You'll also find nine campsites with water, 25 campsites with water and 30-amp electric service, 10 campsites with water and 50-amp electric service, an overflow camping area and primitive camping sites.

    Facilities and Amenities

    • Lake McClellan Recreation Area offers a two-week camping limit during any one visit and has fire rings, grills, showers and restrooms -- all for a standard fee. West 40 RV Park is a pet-friendly campground and has Wi-Fi, some sites for pull-throughs and big-rig access. Facilities and amenities in Caprock Canyons are a store, restrooms, showers, a dump station, a boat ramp, interpretive exhibits, horse rentals, a free audio driving guide, a fishing pier and a swimming beach.

    Activities

    • Picnicking, fishing, hiking and wildlife viewing are activities offered in Lake McClellan Recreation Area year-round. In Caprock Canyons, activities include horseback riding, mountain biking, boating, fishing, lake swimming, scenic drives and guided tours. With a total of 13 trails, hiking is another activity you can enjoy here.

    Area Attractions

    • Lake McClellan Recreation Area is about a 10-minute drive from Devil's Rope Museum, which is described by its website as "The largest barbed wire historic museum in the world." In Pampa, about a 40-minute drive from the recreation area, you can play an 18-hole round of golf in Hidden Hills Golf Course. Caprock Canyons is about a two-hour drive to two major cities on the Southern High Plains of Texas: Amarillo and Lubbock. Less than a two-hour drive from the park is West Texas State University in Canyon. The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is located in the school and features exhibits about the history of the area.
