Located seven miles away from Fossil is Bear Hollow County Park, which features a forested look and is bordered by the Butte River. The park is located on Highway 19 and is owned and operated by Wheeler County year-round. Visitors pay a fee for every night they stay in the park. Each site has a picnic table and a fire pit, and the campgrounds feature handicap-accessible vault toilets and running water but no electricity. The site allows RV camping as well.
Shelton Wayside County Park is located 10 miles southeast of Fossil on Highway 19 and has space for 40 groups of campers. Amenities available at this campground include vault toilets and clean drinking water. The campsites are bordered by Service Creek, which runs along the edge of the park. Pets and horses are allowed at the park, and two pedestrian bridges across the creek give them a great place to roam. The park is open from April to November (weather permitting), with a per night fee is imposed by Wheeler County, which owns and operates the park.
The Fossil Motel and RV Park offers more amenities than other campgrounds in the area, but it isn't a traditional campground where campers can pitch a tent in an individual campsite. The park offers showers and restrooms, a barbecue grill, and a picnic area and features a creek that runs through the back side. Visitors can also schedule a shuttle trip to the John Day River, one of the nation's longest free-flowing river systems. Nearby spots also provide access to hunting, boating rafting, and fishing.
