The wide, shallow Maitland River wraps around Falls Reserve Conservation Area, creating a number of low waterfalls that encompass the 230-acre park. Of the 190 campsites, some are radio-free, ensuring a more peaceful camping experience. In addition to swimming in the shallow yet gushing waterfalls, fishing remains a popular pastime along the river. In winter, catching rainbow trout and salmon is common, and in summer reel in small mouth bass.
The waves of Lake Huron splash onto a 1,600-foot stretch of sandy beach at Lake Huron Resort. This private beach area is accessible by a paved path that leads back to a campground, which accommodates RVs up to 50 feet long. Farther north, Mackenzie Tent and Trailer Park provides similar lake views with beach access, shady lots, horseshoe pits and shuffleboard. At Point Farms Provincial Park, 208 campsites are spread over two family-friendly campgrounds. The park is ideal for tent campers who wish to embrace nature without forgoing modern conveniences like potable water, electricity and laundry facilities.
Shelter Valley Campground provides 174 campsites -- 30 of which are dedicated to non-seasonal campers -- and one cabin on the banks of the Maitland River. With a heated pool, playground and shuffleboard, Shelter Valley caters to both children and adults. Enhance your time at the campground by attending one of the organized events during open season. Activities range from kid-friendly, such as children-only organized golf games, to food-centric, such as a chili cook-off and Hawaiian luau with pig roast.
At Auburn Riverside Retreat, a 15-minute drive northeast of Goderich, kids delight in taking the daily wagon ride to the elk paddocks to hand feed the campground's elk population. The quiet, family-oriented campsite has more transient than seasonal campsites, spread over 97 acres of wilderness on the Maitland River. Participate in one of the campground-organized activities, like horseshoe tournaments and potlucks, take a dip in the pool or fish for bass and trout in the river.
