Campgrounds in Silver Bay, Minnesota

Situated 56 miles northeast of Duluth, Silver Bay, Minnesota, bills itself as "The Heart of the North Shore" of Lake Superior. The newest community on the northern shoreline of the lake, Silver Bay is home to about 2,000 residents. It's also close to a number of state parks and forests that provide opportunities for hiking, fishing, boating, snow shoeing, cross-country skiing and, of course, camping.
  1. Tettegouche State Park

    • Check drought conditions before starting a campfire.

      Located four miles from town, Tettegouche's 9,346 acres--including 23 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles of ski trails and 12 miles of snowmobile trails--are open to visitors year round. Tettegouche Camp, located in the park's interior, is accessible only by foot, mountain bike, cross-country skis, or snowshoes. The camp consists of four primitive camping cabins with no toilets or running water. A shower building and toilet facility is within walking distance of each cabin, and jugs are provided to move water from the shower building or hand pump. Each rental cabin includes the use of one canoe with paddles and life vests (available at the park office), a fire ring with a grill, firewood and a picnic table. Cabin and park users share a common lodge building with a two fireplaces, benches and tables inside, and picnic tables outside. A large, screened porch faces Mic Mac Lake.

    Finland Campground and Day-Use Area

    • Although no grizzly bears live in northern Minnesota, black bears and other wild animals do. Campsites can attract a variety of wildlife.

      Finland State Forest and the Finland Campground and Day-Use Area is about seven miles from Silver Bay. Adjacent to the public landing of the Baptism River and seven miles from Lake Superior, this campground has 39 primitive sites--one of which is handicapped-accessible--and one group campsite that can be reserved by contacting the Tettegouche State Park. The sites have cleared spaces, fire rings, and tables, as well as vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water. Each site is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground allows egress/ingress with ATVs to 15 designated campsites which have access to the Moose Walk/Moose Run and the Red Dot ATV trail systems. It also has one picnic shelter.

    Wildhurst Lodge Campground

    • Year-round access makes North Shore campgrounds havens for snowmobilers, skiers, and snowshoers.

      Located fewer than 13 miles from Silver Bay in Finland State Park, Wildhurst is a private campground that offers year-round facilities, including 22 campsites. Of these, 17 are tent-only and five are RV-only. There are also two camping cabins available. Wildhurst has direct access to snowmobile and ATV trails.

    George H. Crosby Manitou State Park

    • Hike into the sites at Manitou.

      This 6,682-acre park, 12 miles from Silver Bay, offers remote campsites for backpackers only. All sites are near water, and they are one-quarter mile to four and a half miles from the parking area. All hikers are expected to bring out anything they bring into the park. Campers are allowed to gather firewood at their campsites.

    Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

    • Take advantage of snowshoe and ski trails.

      Fewer than nine miles from Silver Bay and best known for its lighthouse, this 2,075-acre park allows cart-in and pack-in camping to sites along Lake Superior. The park has 12 miles of hiking trails; eight miles of paved bike trails; lake, river and stream fishing; and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
