South Dakota State Parks With Cabins

South Dakota is home to more than 60 state parks and recreational areas that boast wildlife, scenery, outdoor attractions and geographical wonders. These state parks allow fishing, boating, hunting, hiking and swimming, and many overnight visitors to several of the parks may choose to rent overnight cabins. Most cabins in South Dakota's state parks are furnished with only the bare necessities, and reservations are required.
  1. Angostura Recreation Area

    • One of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota, Angostura is a water lover's haven. Its reservoir and 36 miles of shoreline offer fishing, swimming, boating and other water sports, as well as a playground, picnic shelters, fishing docks, canoe and kayak rentals, boat ramps and a marina. For overnight guests, the park has 10 cabins that have heating, air conditioning and a porch. Furnishings include beds, a table and benches.

    Newton Hills State Park

    • Glaciers created this narrow strip of hills and forest that's part of the geological formation called the Coteau des Prairie, which has prompted many recent legends, including tales of buried gold, robbers' hideouts and horse thieves. Newton Hills has eight cabins that include heating and air conditioning, beds to accommodate four or five people and an outdoor fire grate, picnic table and porch. In addition to numerous outdoor activities, a lodge and a warming shelter, the park also hosts the Sioux River Folk Festival, a three-day event held annually on the first full weekend in August.
