Birmingham, Alabama's largest city, has several gay bars with a variety of themes and entertainment styles. Though the city has a conservative tradition that once discouraged bars of this type, the climate has relaxed in recent years. Joe's on Seventh is a bar and entertainment venue at the intersection of Seventh avenue and 27th street in the Lakeview District of downtown Birmingham. Joe's offers entrainment and dancing in a venue that has the feel of a local neighborhood bar. With scheduled events on most weekend nights, Joe's offers female impersonators, DJ's, and entertainment to fit a variety of tastes. As of September 2010, cover charges are $5 for those over 21, and $8 for those between 18 and 20 accompanied by a member 24 years old or over. A valid ID is required regardless of age.

Steel Urban Lounge, which is open seven days a week, is located at the corner of 1st avenue and 23rd street in the Historic Loft District of Birmingham. Each night, Steel features a different theme or event. Special nights include "Tuesday Trivia with Reed," "Thursday Skool Daze," "Five for Fridays," and "Saturday Ladies Nights." Steel offers a variety of drinks and drink specials each night and can accommodate special events upon request.

Quest, a private dance and entertainment club in downtown Birmingham, requires a cover charge for entrance. The club is open seven days a week and is open only to those 21 and up on Mondays and Tuesdays. As of September 2010, anyone over 18 can enter on Wednesday through Sunday by paying a cover charge of $10 to $15. Regular cover is $5. Quest features night drink specials and themes including Ladies' Shows, Sassy Sundays, and pool tournament nights.
